Plain Sev | Oma Podi

Hope you all had a wonderful and safe Diwali celebration with family and friends as we did. Though there’s nothing much we do on Diwali, I love cooking some of the traditional dishes on this occasion. Along with our regular menu, I made some masala vada, thenkhuzal murukku, sev etc. to make the day special. There’s one more thing that I love about this festival is the lights that shower from the skies and rotate on the grounds. We can see enormous shades of light around the vicinity which is why it is called ‘the festival of lights’. I lit a few lamps/diyas at home which was looking marvelous. And at the end of the day, we had loads of fun bursting basic crackers like sparkles and flower pots. Little one enjoyed watching those beautiful colors and sparkles around.

Coming to today’s recipe, Plain Sev or Oma Pudi or Ompudi is one of my favorite snacks from my childhood days. I love this because it is tasty, crunchy, and crisp. I’m sure this is one of the addictive snacks which you can munch on non-stop.

Plain Sev | Oma Podi

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 20 minutes

Total Time: 35 minutes

Yield: 2-3 cups

Diwali Savory Snack

Besan/Kadalai Maavu – 1 cup

Rice Flour – 1/2 cup

Turmeric Powder – 1/4 tsp, optional

Hot Oil – 2 tbsp

Hing – Pinch

Salt to Taste

Oil – For deep frying

Sieve gram flour and rice flour to remove any lumps. In a large mixing bowl add the sieved flour along with salt, hot oil, hing and salt. Mix to combine.

Now, add water little by little to make nice and sticky dough.

Press through idiappam/sev press directly to the hot oil. When you add a pinch of dough in the hot oil, it will raise immediately. This is the right temperature.

Make a circle like and ensure you don’t overlap. Carefully turn and cook till the bubbles stops. It takes very less time to cook.

Transfer on a tissue to drain out excess oil. Once the sev cools, store it in an air tight container.

Sprinkle little water if you feel the dough has got dry and unable to press through. Try again.
