grey Aval Payasam | Poha Kheer

Aval Payasam is a very easy recipe and can be made without much preparation beforehand.  Me and my son both love sweets of any sort. Since jaggery is a healthy substitute for sugar I try to make sweets for him using this. Jaggery is rich in minerals mainly iron. Also, jaggery acts as a cleansing agent and as digestive agent.  You can also make this payasam using sugar as per you sugar intake. I will try to post that version too. Here’s the recipe..

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: 12 minutes

Total Time: 17 minutes

Easy Aval Payasam for any occasion.


Poha/Aval – 1/2 cup

Milk – 1.5 cup

Grated Jaggery – 3 tbsp

Cardamom Powder – 1 pinch

Ghee – 1 tsp

Chopped Dry Fruits - 1 tbsp


Heat ghee in pan and roast the chopped dry fruits till golden color. I used dry grapes, cashew nuts & almonds. Set aside.

Wash and soak poha for 5 minutes. Drain water and set aside.

Heat milk in a pan and let it simmer for 4-5 mins. By doing this the milk will slightly thicken. To this add the grated jaggery and carmamom powder and mix well.

Now, add the poha/aval and simmer for 4 minutes. Stir occasionally. Add the roasted dry fruits and serve hot or cold.


Adjust the jaggery according to your taste.

I used the thick variety poha/aval. You can also use the thin variety; just reduce the soaking time to 3 minutes.

While the kheer rests it gets thickend, add in more milk while serving.
